iPhone 6: Frequently asked questions

On September 9, 2014, Apple introduced two new versions of the iPhone: the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. We'd like to offer you a brief overview of the new iPhones and try to answer some questions you may have at this time.
Apple also released a new device called Apple Watch, a smartwatch that can sync with your iPhone. It will be available in early 2015, and we'll offer more information at that time.

iPhone 6 and 6 Plus: What's new?

The biggest difference between these two new iPhones and previous models is the size. Compared to a 4 inch screen on the iPhone 5S and earlier versions, the iPhone 6 has a 4.7 inch screen, while the 6 Plus has a 5.5 inch screen. Both versions of the iPhone 6 also include a larger, higher-quality camera than previous models.

How much does it cost?

  • The iPhone 6 (16GB) starts at $199—a 64GB ($299) and 128GB ($399) version are also available
  • The iPhone 6 Plus (16GB) starts at $299—a 64GB ($399) and 128GB($499) version are also available.
These prices require you to sign a two-year contract with a wireless provider, such as AT&TSprintVerizon Wireless, or T-Mobile. In addition to regular cell phone service, you'll be required to purchase a mobile data plan, which usually costs at least $20 per month.
You can also get the iPhone 5S for $99 or the iPhone 5C for free with a two-year contract, but keep in mind that these are older models.

When can I buy it?

Starting on September 19, you will be able to purchase the iPhone 6 from the Apple Store, wireless providers, major retailers, and online stores.

Which iPhone should I buy?

There are several factors you may want to consider if you're thinking of buying a new iPhone, including how much you want to spend and how soon you plan to upgrade your phone in the future.
If you don't mind spending a little more now, the iPhone 6 or 6 Plus will likely prove to be fast and reliable devices for several years. But if you aren't ready to make a big investment, the iPhone 5S and 5C provide more affordable options. Keep in mind, however, that these models are likely to be outdated more quickly than the iPhone 6.

Does Touch ID pose a risk to my privacy?

The iPhone 6 uses Touch ID to unlock your phone with your fingerprint. The fingerprint information used by Touch ID is only stored on your iPhone—not on Apple's servers. As a result, it's very unlikely that anyone would ever be able to access or steal this information. However, if you're uncomfortable with this feature, you can turn it off.

Do I need a case?

Although you can use it without a case, it's a good idea to purchase some kind of case and a screen protector. All iPhones use glass screens that can break if dropped.

Can I use my old iPhone accessories?

The new iPhones use a different kind of plug to charge and connect to your computer, known as the Lightning connector. Older versions of the iPhone (iPhone 4S and earlier) use a 30-pin connector.
If you have any accessories designed to work with the 30-pin connector, such as a a car charger, you will need to buy an adapter from the Apple Store, or buy accessories that are designed to work with the Lightning connector.
